In 2017 handball club “Dragunas” organized the first street handball tournament in Klaipeda, Lithuania. We had 15 teams from Lithuania and Latvia.
We had a lot of attention and we decided to make this tournament traditional.
So this year 2018 we had the second street handball tournament in Klaipeda. (See video click the play button above.) This year, due to bad weather, teams from Latvia and Estonia couldn’t arrive and participate, but we hope to see them next year. We had 20 teams from Lithuania (more than 200 participants in total): kids were competing in 5 age groups. They had a lot of fun and a good fight despite that it was raining all day. As you can see in our video and photos, it was a great time.
We are happy that the tournament this year took place in a non-traditional place – in a military battalion, because our club collaborates with this military unit (we invite soldiers to watch our games for free and they let us do our events in their territory). So kids also had a great time not only playing in a special place, but also talking with soldiers who showed them various weapons, military clothes, transport etc. So it was also an educational event.
We are happy that our tournament was noticed by Forum Club Handball who sponsored our tournament and helped us to spread the word about this kind of handball.
Also, we got the attention of local news websites and local TV – we want to show that handball is an interesting game that can be played practically everywhere and by everyone. :)
Many thanks to
Chairman and head coach of club “Dragunas”
Arturas Juskenas and Virginija Kesmine :)
